These were my "e-cigarette" notifications of press coverage yesterday - spot the weapon of choice? Can't get us on second hand vapour, but they CAN by emphasising "the Cheeeldren". I've been through the anti smoking vengeance - so I think this is just the beginning for vapers. If we expose the tactics Tobacco Control purposefully used to sculpt the attitudes of society to smoking, and not fall victim to them ourselves, we might be able to rescue ourselves from the same fate. But we CANNOT live in cloud cuckoo land, thinking what happened to smokers, will not happen to us. Kids' use of e-cigarettes increasing Edmonton Journal

The deliberate misuse of the words "children" and "use" borders on criminal. The survey results reported did not distinguish the age of these "children" (who knows if most of the high school "children" reporting were 18-19 year old smokers) and "use" is if they EVER tried an e-cigarette in their life. If one Junior tried one puff at 17 in 2011 and an 18 year old Senior tried a puff off of one in 2012 (but never again), the number has now "doubled" for "children" who have ever "used" an e-cigarette. The real statistics wouldn't "count" the kid who tried it in 2011 in the 2012 survey and only look at new first-time e-cigarette tries. If 200 kids tried it in 2011 but not in 2012 and 175 kids tried it for the first time in 2012, that does not "double" the number of "users." Adding up all of the "ever used" numbers tells us nothing and is just meant to deceive the public!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely correct - and so twististics are formed!
DeleteAnd the list of stories you won't see the mainstream media carrying on this (because there are stories about their manipulation of facts and figures they're just not getting any mainstream media coverage)

And you make a very good point, vapers just can't put their heads in the sand and pretend the antz are our friends .
We represent a real problem to them. We're out enjoying ourselves and Oh My God children could see us doing it.
They thought they could kill smoking culture and they have come damn close to making smokers and endangered species.
If we don't look at history and don't understand this is all a "moral crusade" and that the old world puritans and their witch hunts have just taken on a new form we risk underestimating them.
Yes - we underestimating - but Antis have a template they know works!
ReplyDeleteLogically, any minor who has tried smoking tobacco is bound to try e-cigs - hardly surprising given that vaping is actively promoted as a much safer, cheaper, cooler and socially acceptable alternative. Indeed, I predict that they will be far more under 18 vapers than are currently smoking. And much easier to conceal from parents, teachers and antis. If nothing else, this will be grounds enough for the hard core Puritans to continue to oppose what remains a potential addiction. Worst case scenario - it may not be too long before nicotine-related diseases are up there with tobacco related ones. Probably the same variety. Then again, perhaps not if/when Big Pharma/Big Tobacco hold the monopoly. It’ll largely depend on who has the will and financial motivation to fund anti nicotine research.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, vapers shouldn’t fall into the trap by believing this is about health. If it was, tobacco would have been banned by now and e-cigs wouldn’t be on trial. If truth be told, the long term success of the industry will require this to happen. As things stand vapers/manufacturers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. In any event, sooner or later, nicotine duty will be imposed.
I also think we are torn between praising vaping and denigrating smoking - I am.
DeleteHi Liz,
ReplyDeleteWould you be willing to join the savevecigs campaign and join the committee? we need help to keep the message alive, especially now we have another month of campaigning - we are being lumped in with the tobacco industry - so it would be great to have a few well know vapers on board. We wouldn´t ask much of you - we are hoping to go to Brussels at the end of sept - would you fancy coming and chatting to a few MEPs?? if so let me know, our e mail is: campaign@saveecigs.com
Thanks
Katie.
Thanks - but I cannot.I have promoted the campaign - I've signed it. But the smoker in me cannot accept what you say is true! You are repeating anti-smoking rhetoric which as an older person, I saw grow into a huge disgusting lie, purposely promoted to make society feel things about smoking that are not scientifically true.
DeleteSecond Hand Smoke is one of the worst ones. Yet you are promoting it here in your text.
"The friends and family of smokers also benefit when a smoker switches to e-cigarettes. They are no longer putting their own health at risk through passive smoking, their homes are happier, healthier places to be, and most importantly they no longer have to worry about their friend or family member dying prematurely as a direct result of smoking.
Now to you, these seven million people may simply be e-cigarette users and smokers, but to us they are our family and friends. We have watched these people slowly killing themselves when they used to smoke tobacco cigarettes. We lived with the consequences of daily close contact with them when they smoked. For some of us, we nursed them and cared for them as they died prematurely as a direct result of smoking tobacco cigarettes.
E-cigarettes for us have been a revelation. Since our friends and family members made the switch to e-cigarettes, it is now a pleasure to be around them. They are healthier, happier people; they do not smell, and we do not have to suffer indirectly as a result of their smoking."
This is very "iffy" stuff! And I cannot talk that way, mostly because, in my life, there has been no evidence of this. It is a picture that Anti Tobacco Industry have painted so that people can be morally outraged at how smokers "kill" them.
My best dream of the future is that the record be put straight for smokers, that they also get consideration for what they are protesting at the EU on the same date which is equally appalling as medicalising electronic cigarettes. The Smoking ban should be made sane, the economy would resurrect itself, "Public Health" should attend to the things which were once its remit - water, sewerage and cholera and we should all - ALL be fighting against the intrusion into our lifestyles. Whether we vape or smoke should be our consumer choice. Then both smokers and vapers would have been treated fairly.
So thank you for asking. But I cannot do it and remain true to myself.
I'm in awe of you Liz. {wild applause}
DeleteIf E Cigs save lives then saveecigs you are saying they are a medicine and so you cannot complain if they are regulated as such. If not, then the campaign should get off its high moral ground, accept that e-cigs are a pleasurable alternative to smoking - like changing brand which is how I find them - and promote instead that they are a very easy alternative to quitting tobacco. If the antis want to assume that means "saving lives" then let them.
ReplyDeleteSmokers and vapers however are the same people. The E Cigs Save Lives campaign has already shot itself in the foot and handed ammo to antis. It is divisive and offensive and it has done the cause of e cigs no favours while throwing fellow smokers to the wolves.
Like DP, I'm in awe of you Liz for your insight and support for BOTH sides. Well said.
Thank you DP and PN. I have no solution on how we could work together. I wish we smokers and vapers could. But I think I might have hung myself with other vapers with my opinions!
Delete:( Shame on them Liz. You do a damn fine job defending their right to use their legal consumer product of choice. If they can't handle the fact that you don't hate us nor our legal product of choice that isn't your problem - it's their's. Such attitudes won't win them friends or any ground on their cause to be left alone as legitimate vapers. Keep up the good work and thanks again xx
